Gouranga Gouranga Gouranga

Okay, here's a strange one for you. I got this e-mail yesterday:

From: Neateye (nitaigouranga@aol.com)
Subject: Gouranga

Call out Gouranga be happy!!!
Gouranga Gouranga Gouranga ....
That which brings the highest happiness!!

I googled it, and it seems a bunch of people have been getting this same e-mail, many of them from this same e-mail address.

There are several theories out there, and the theories are based on three facts:

  1. Gouranga is a Hare Krishna word for happiness. Nitai gouranga means eternal happiness.
  2. Grand Theft Auto had an easter egg involving the term.
  3. Gouranga is tagged on motorway bridges (overpasses) across the UK.
(citynoise.org)

Most theorists claim the e-mails are from Krisna devotees trying to spread the word. But Krishna seems like such a peaceful religion. Why turn to spam and graffiti?

Others suggest the GTA game developers are trying to get a little cheap advertising. But GTA has evolved since then. The series hardly needs any advertising. The next time they make a GTA sequel, it'll sell a shitload regardless.

No matter what the reason, the e-mails seem so futile. They're not advertising any product. They're not spreading a virus. And they're not convincing anyone of anything. Yes I initiated a dialog about this, but the e-mail in no way made me question my own spiritual convictions.

So, I ask for your input. WTF?

  1. Gourange, baby, gouranga! I don’t know what it means, but it sure is fun to say.

  2. WFT indeed! I’m just jealous I’ve not have one of these!

  3. Eddie, you’re right, it is sorta fun to say. Sounds to me a little like something from Johnny Dangerously. Like, “you fargain ice-holes, Ima gonna punch you in the gourangas.”

Jilly, I sorta feel like I’ve been initiated into an underground club. And this club is oh so mysterious.

  4. Spam has been a weirdass creation from the start. Seriously, what do you gain by setting lose a virus that you’re incapable of telling how many computers you infect? You may as well just send out a weird little message with no point.

Plus, like eddie said, there’s the fun to say bit. Always more fun than a virus.

  5. thanks for the link to citynoise i hope you check out the site again and consider posting something!

  6. G-Fry,
I used to think that all spam was bad spam. But this was kind of interesting. Made me curious at least.

    Peter,
Rock on. You have a cool site. Keep up the good work.

  7. That is amazing. You have a photo of the Mancunian Way in Manchester. Bizzare. I drove over it this afternoon. Wow! That’s it.

  8. That’s so cool Stevie. It’s been years since I last visited Manchester. Great city – and home of Morrissey.

  9. maybe somebody is just trying really hard to start their own cultural meme. like viral marketing with no product. it would be cool to hear everyone saying some pointless phrase and think to yourself, “ha, i started that.”

  10. Thanks for stopping by, Jeff.

Here are a couple of updates:
    A picture
    A Wikipedia entry

  11. GOURANGA GOURANGA GOURANGA Ha ha lol, works for me. Thank you Hare Krishna man (and/or woman).
