This Old Man

It's not an unusual sight in Philly. A couple of badass looking tough guys driving slowly through Center City, leaning way back in their seats, windows rolled down, stereo booming. But there was something strange about these guys.

I saw them yesterday. They were waiting at a stoplight, blaring their music. Here's the thing. They weren't blasting Luda or Fifty. These guys were listening to children's music:

This old man, he played one
He played knick-knack on my thumb
With a knick-knack paddywhack,
Give your dog a bone
This old man came rolling home

I heard the song get all the way to "This old man, he played four, He played knick-knack on my door." I mean, that's a good 20-30 seconds of music, so I know it wasn't a sample that was being looped in a hip hop song. It was a fucking nursery rhyme. Is this normal? Am I missing out on some underground trend?

What's next - faux-gangstas strutting down South Street singing, "I'm a little teapot, Short and stout?" Or maybe a couple of thugs throwing dice in the alley chanting together - "Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O."

Ridiculous.

  1. That’s so funny. I can’t get that image out of my head, even if it is a little scary :)

  2. kind of makes you think what they are really singing about when they say “yes sir, yes sir, three bags full” (add a *beyotch* at the end and you’re set).

  3. I’m reminded of Andrew Dice Clay’s take on nursery rhymes, like “Hickory Dickory Dock…” and “Old Mother Hubbard…”.

  4. “…B-I-N-G-O and Bingo was his name-o!”

  5. Yeah, TS, these guys were taking it so seriously. I totally don’t get it. It was pretty friggin funny.

I like that thought, Trav. Maybe it’s a secret code.

    Naughty, naughty, Sar.

Don’t tell me you’re rockin the nursery rhymes, Mimi.

  6. Ol’ Motha hubba’d liv’in’a cubb’ad, MOTHA-Fucka.

  7. Ev, Ol’ Motha Hubba’d has got nothing on the old woman who lived in a shoe.

  8. i’m a little teapot short and stout….
