What I’m Listening to These Days
Nov. 08, 2005 by Jason
Kira invited me to join a one time only cd club thing.
Here’s the concept:
Break up the list of people who want to join up into groups of four or five. E-mail everyone in each group the names and addresses of the other people in the group.
Each participant makes a CD of the music they’re listening to lately. I think the idea is to avoid padding the CD with songs you know are cool but you haven’t really listened to in the last five years. It also allows for a few guilty pleasures. If you’re listening to Def Leppard every day, then they probably belong on your CD.
I finished my CD and sent it out to the people in my group:
Caitlin
Srah
Loveisjustagame
(and Kira)
Here’s the track list I came up with:
- Franz Ferdinand – Do You Want To?
- Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart
- Crooked Fingers – Call to Love
- The Decemberists – 16 Military Wives
- Death Cab for Cutie – Expo ‘86
- The Shins – Girl Inform Me
- The Mountain Goats – The Young Thousands
- The Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies)
- Rilo Kiley – A Better Son-Daughter
- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
- Interpol – NYC
- Snow Patrol – Run
- Songs Ohia – Lioness
- Iron & Wine – Freedom Hangs Like Heaven
- Modest Mouse – Satin in a Coffin
- Bright Eyes – We are Nowhere and It’s Now
- The White Stripes – Little Ghost
Random thoughts regarding my list:
That Franz Ferdinand song might be about butt sex. Yes I still listen to Morrissey. I tried to avoid putting any singles on there, but the Morrissey song and 16 Military Wives slipped through. The singer from Crooked Fingers sounds like Neil Diamond. Death Cab is played out, but I saw them live recently, so they made the list. That Shins song is pretty old. Sorry, I still love that shit. The Mountain Goats - either you love ‘em or you hate ‘em. Arcade Fire needs to put out a new record. Re-releasing their first EP doesn’t count. The singer for the band Rilo Kiley is not named Rilo Kiley. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are the indie rock version of the Talking Heads. Interpol - the subway is a porno. It’s a little late to jump on the Snow Patrol bandwagon, but fuck it, I’m jumping. Jason Molina likes to play music reeaaalllly slooowwwwly. Iron & Wine are huge now. I had to throw a Modest Mouse song on there. Conor Oberst looks like Donnie Darko. The White Stripes are full on bluegrass these days. And I love it.

You listen to a song about butt sex and you have “The Mountain Goats” on there too?

Yeah, that butt sex thing is just a guess. Franz Ferinand had some radio success with Take Me Out. On that same album, there was a song about the singer dancing with someone named Michael. Could be a dude, could be a chick with a strange name, or maybe it’s not autobiographical.
But assuming he is gay (not that there’s anything wrong with that), the song Do You Want To on the new album perhaps has some sexual innuendo to it.
Oh well I woke up tonight and said I
I’m gonna make somebody love me
I’m gonna make somebody love me
And now I know, now I know, now I know
I know that it’s you
You’re lucky, lucky
You’re so lucky!
Oh well do you, do you do you want to, want to go
Where I’ve never let you before?

Perhaps? LOL I’d say you hit that nail square on the head JJ.
I’ve been listening to The Flaming Lips a lot lately.

Hahaha!
Yeah the Flaming Lips rock my socks off. I like the older stuff best. Transmissions from the Satellite Heart is such a great album. Perfect from start to finish.

Yeah! I love the lyrics:
I had seven faces thought i knew which one to wear
I’m sick of spending these lonely nights training myself not to care
the subway is a porno pavements they are a mess
i know you’ve supported me for a long time
somehow i’m not impressed
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
subway she is a porno and the pavements they are a mess
i know you’ve supported me for a long time
somehow i’m not impressed
It’s up to me now turn on the bright lights
It’s up to me now turn on the bright lights
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
New York Cares (got to be some more change in my life)
It’s up to me now turn on the bright lights
(got to be some more change in my life)
oh, It’s up to me now turn on the bright lights
(got to be some more change in my life)

You know, I did not recieve my October cd club cd from the Philly area last month. Is this happening before you two go jetsetting around the world? Is it, huh, is it?!
WAH!

Thanks for the CD! There’s something in that Decemberists song that makes me think of They Might Be Giants and I can’t put my finger on it. After reading your comments, I will listen more carefully to the Franz Ferdinand…

TMBG rock my socks off! Any rock band with accordian is okay in my book. I think you’re on to something with the Decemberists/TMBG comparison.
