Garfield is so Terribly Depressing
Mar. 20, 2006 by Jason
Garfield, like nearly all newspaper comic strips, sucks donkey balls. The humor is watered down and tame. But someone recently discovered that if you take away the morbidly obese cat’s thought bubbles, the result is an utterly depressing series about a man who has no self respect, talks only to his pets, and may be on the verge of suicide.

sweet.
it’s kinda like the family circus thing where people change the wording.

You know what’s even more depressing….?
Name the cat Buddy, and you have a cartoon about me.

Suddenly, after reading this post, Garfield just got funny again.
They should do one where Jon blows his brains out, and Garfield thinks they are lasagna and eats them. Then Odie can come along and consume the remains of whatever might have leaked onto the floor from dead Jon’s bladder and rectum.

um. the garfield creator lives and works in muncie (where i now live, although try to deny).
muncie, indiana takes their garfield (and jim davis and the entire paws corporation) very seriously.
in fact, i’d be willing to bet JJ is now on some kind of barred list for the entire east central indiana region.
no corn for you.

Have you ever heard those stories where someone dies.. and no one realizes it for, like, weeks.
And then they find the person because a neighbor notices an awful stench coming from the house.. and they discover that the cat ate off half the person’s face.

Yes! I Googled that Family Circus thing - lawyers made them take down the site.
MacBros:
Buddy is way cooler than Garfield.
ZF:
Now that’s a great idea for a Garfield comic.
Jessica:
“muncie, indiana takes their garfield… very seriously. ”
That tells me ‘ol Jim Davis ain’t getting the job done. An entire town takes his comedy seriously. They should really be laughing.
LC:
Totally! Reminds me of this:

Garfield, Cathy, Marmaduke, Family Circus, Ziggy… how the hell are these unfunny comics actually syndicated and still earning their creators a butt-load of money?

i always hated cathy.
the garfield sans cat commentary is great. makes me think of a great sequel to the shitty-ass movie that i never saw. john enters a shopping center, sprays gunfire, then shoots himself.
the end.

I’ve always liked Garfield. His commentary is so raw and honest. But if you look at it seriously, it is depressing. I once emailed a group of friends everyday for 2 weeks strips where Jon fails in relationships. It was pretty funny b/c a few of my friends are single guys bemoaning relationships - no one can be as bad as Jon.

They’re still around, but I hope no one’s making any real money on them.
Wysol:
The Garfield randomizer! Fantastic.
Soviet:
I think they did end up making that movie. Went straight to DVD, but it’s a cult classic.
Ang:
True. Jon’s a total mess.
