Vegetarians are weird and unhealthy and stupid

I quit eating meat 20 years ago. I was 15. I was a silly kid. I did a lot of things back then that didn't make sense. I died my hair weird colors, tried to give myself homemade tattoos, broke a tooth in half in a skateboard accident, etc. I was reckless. And as much as I was trying to be different, I focused a ton of energy on what people thought of me.

I went through a lot of phases after that. Straight edge, punk rock, grunge. I went to college, I got a job, I traveled the world. And through all of that - through all of those changes in my life - I never went back to eating meat.

Over the past 20 years, I've done a little reading on the subject of vegetarianism. Not much. But I've given it a lot of thought and I've talked to literally hundreds of people about it. This silly little thing I tried out as a kid soon became a core part of me. It defines me in some ways. So while I'm no authority on what is right or healthy, I can absolutely tell you it's worked out for me. So well in fact, that a few months ago I switched to a full vegan diet.

The reactions I get from people are all over the place. From "That's great!" to "Hmmmm..." to "What is wrong with you? Vegetarians are weird and unhealthy and stupid." And while I'll happily answer any questions anyone cares to ask, I don't react well to negativity. I get flustered. That's why I don't get into arguments over it. I stop defending myself and change the topic as soon as people get too aggressive. I just want to live my life.

But that's what the Internet's for, right? Sharing information? I thought it might be a good idea to put my thoughts together and post them here for anyone who cares. And if you don't care, then please feel free to move along.

I understand why people get worked up over the topic. We've been raised in this environment where eating meat and dairy and eggs is a part of daily life. It's part of our culture. Why would anyone stray from that normalcy? Well, here's my motivation.

1. I'm not a killer. I'm just a regular guy who wants to have a family and a job and maybe a few nice things in life. I don't want to murder things. I don't want to slice a cow's throat while it hangs upside down and screams through the gurgling flow as she bleeds to death so the meat will be nice and fresh and kosher. I don't want to catch hundreds of fish in a giant net then pull them from their native environment to the horrifying abyss of the open air where their gills struggle to gasp for oxygen as they slowly die writhing in pain.

2. I am not a baby. I don't need breastmilk. I don't want to suck on your mom's tits. I don't want to suck on a cow's tits either. Even when you put it in a jug and sell it at the store, it's still milk from a cow's tits.

3. I'm not a rapist or a kidnapper. You know how they get a cow to produce milk? They get her pregnant and steal her baby. That's the ONLY way to do it. They force a cow to have a baby and as soon as that baby is born, they steal it. And the cow cries. And the baby cries. Then they take the milk that's intended for that baby and they pour it into bottles for HUMANS. Baffling, I know.

4. I don't drink menstrual blood. Call me old fashioned, but when a woman has her period, I don't want to eat it. I also don't want to eat a chicken's menstrual fluids either. Even if you cook it in a pan with butter.

People often tell me that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy. I mean, everyone needs to eat meat to survive, right? I don't know. I'm not a nutritionist. But I've had a pretty healthy couple of decades. I eat vegetables and legumes and grains and fruit. I feel pretty damn good about it. You know what's not healthy? Murder and kidnapping and rape and torture. I can only imagine what ingesting the byproducts of all those crimes actually does to a person's body.

I welcome your thoughts on the subject. And if you want to hear more, I highly recommend this video from Gary Yourofsky. Good stuff from a guy who lives life compassionately.

  1. I’ve thought about doing it. But not Milk and Eggs. More because of the crazy price of meat these days. I like meat too. But I would like to eat more non meat things. Problem for me is I live by myself and produce doesn’t keep very long. And I’m lazy when it comes to preparing food. I’ve seen vegetarian dishes and they just seem to be a lot of prep work…

Do you feel better though. I know a lot of friends who are Vegan and they just seem to have all this energy. Is that what you get when you cut out meat?

  2. I just proofread that comment. Jeepers I must be tired. Sounds like a frigging 12 year old wrote that LOL

3:40Am and I’m still up. Fuck why am I still awake!?

  3. I do feel better. I feel energetic and positive. I get up every day at 5:30 or 6. And I go to bed around 11 or 11:30. I go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week. And I rarely feel tired. I still drink and play in a band and have fun – so my life’s not entirely health-conscious.

And making food has become really easy for me. I guess I just got into some good habits. Bean and rice burritos, pasta with vegetables, hummus and pita bread, stir fry, etc.

And when I was still eating milk and eggs it was even easier. Pizza and cheese hoagies and cheese enchiladas, etc.

  4. I respect and salute you for your conviction. And you’ll never hear “you’re weird or what’s wrong with you” from me, so long as you don’t get all preachy like almost every other Vegan I’ve ever met has.

I don’t disagree with people having opinions. I disagree with them splattering them about the place when I’m trying to eat the very delicious souls of the cooked creatures that provide me sustenance.

  5. Any preachiness about anything is annoying. I try to keep to myself for the most part. Even my wife and kid eat chicken from time to time.

  6. I respect your choice but I don’t agree with you. I support vegetarians who don’t eat meat or whatever for the purpose of feeling good. Some people just feel better when eating only vegetables. And thats ok. But not eating meat for ethical reasons is the thing i don’t agree with you. You see if you don’t kill and eat that cow, or lamb or whatever, it doesn’t really matter, wolf will. Because you know nature is all about food chain. You know, wolf doesn’t really give a fu*k about cow crying over her baby. And there are some technical things you kinda forgot, yes cow cries over her baby but in return gets food all year around, you know cows have nothing to eat during winter because all of the grass is frozen, so most of them would starve to death. Next thing cows eat like mad, if you give them a ton of food they would eat it all at once, and then die from gases. So first generation of free cows would eat and eat and die, second will eat and eat and damage the ecosystem so the grass cant reproduce and then die of starvation. Next thing cow produces from 15 to 40 liters of milk a day, that would be like 4 to 10 gallons. Thats enough to feed like 60 children, so one baby cow vs 60 regular babies. And finally that baby cow, drinks her mothers milk for as long as it grows up enough, so really it doesn’t miss his mom that much, and again one important thing, if you don’t “steal” that cows milk for a couple of days or week or two she gets sick, like her tits get really nasty infection, and then she is in pain and with no aid probably dies.

  7. That’s a weak ass argument. We’re not wolves, man. We’re people. We care about inflicting pain. We don;t want Michael Vick to drown dogs and we don’t want to rape cows and steal their babies.

There are three ways to look at it:
    1. Hurting animals is cruel. I’m not going to do it.
    2. Hurting animals is cruel. And I don’t give a shit. So I’m going to keep doing it because fuck them.
    3. Animals are property, like machines or vegetables. I’m going to pretend to think they can’t feel pain. I’m going to act like they don’t have emotions. We might as well take advantage of cows and pigs and chickens and parrots and rabbits and cats and dogs.

  8. I’m not a Veggie, I enjoy meat. But that’s my choice. But I agree why veggies don’t, these cows and other farmed animals for food consumption are not treated the best. Most of them are born grow up and live their short lives in cages. Sometimes even having to lay in their own filth. Some places use high voltage to kill them others slit throats. To me that’s horrific. I’ve actually seen how cows, pigs, and chickens are slaughtered, and lets just say it’s something I can’t ever get out of my mind when the topic arises.

Oh and there are no wolves in these farms to take over should we just stop slaughtering them. So yea, that WAS a weak ass argument.

I still eat meat thought, and enjoy it. I’m able to ignore where it comes from. As far as I’m concerned there’s a factory that grown Steak Plants in a huge garden that they sprinkle water and sunshine on till it’s time for the meat harvest.

  9. I totally get that. I do a lot of things that I might regret if I stopped to really consider the impact. For example: buying a product when I don’t know for a fact that it wasn’t produced in a sweatshop. We choose our battles in life. And in some ways ignorance really is bliss.

On this subject, I’ve chosen to give it just a little more thought.

I sound like such a hippie.

  10. Guys, I don’t grow cattle, nor slaughter them, but I am agricultural engineer I run machines do, not cows. I’m not trying to convince you, I’m just saying. Yes inflicting pain on animals is kinda inevitable. But: first of all, cows grow on farms, yes but if you don’t grow them in farms their usual habitat is mountains, and on mountains there are wolves. And I should know that because my father is an organic farmer and he grows cows on fields for milk, and he has to defend them from wolves by shooting at them. Anyway let me tell you a story, only way to replace meat protein is from soy. Which in most cases is genetically altered, that is not a problem for you but if you knew how genetically altered food is grown, then you should know how total pesticides poison soil and kill bees in that region. And when you mess up with soil it takes like ten years to fix. Please guys, this is my job, I indirectly make food. Second of all, vegetable proteins are good for women, but less good for men, because men are not able to digest them right. Next thing, it is ok to talk about not killing animals in areas with good financial standards. But as you might know replacing all of the good things from meat with fruit and vegetables is possible but more expensive, and many people are not really in the position to think about that kind of stuff. And finally growing animals is much much more good good for environment than farming plants, because you use much less diesel fuel, and you don’t cut forests for more fields and so on. Guys like do some research.

  11. You’re implying that you can grow cattle without farming plants. It’s quite the opposite. The amount of deforestation required to support cattle is way beyond what would be needed if that land were used to feed people.

” growing livestock feed in the U.S. alone requires 167 million pounds of pesticides and 17 billion pounds of nitrogen fertilizer each year across some 149 million acres of cropland. ”

“If all the grain currently fed to livestock in the United States were consumed directly by people, the number of people who could be fed would be nearly 800 million,”

    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=meat-and-environment

  12. And the protein requirement is a myth. Long term full-life studies have been conducted – particularly on vegetarian Seventh-Day Adventists.

“Since 1954 more than 250 articles have been published in scientific journals on the Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle and health. …
SDAs in general, have 50% less risk of heart disease, certain types of cancers, strokes, and diabetes. More specifically, recent data suggests that vegetarian men under 40 can expect to live more than eight years longer and women more than seven years longer then the general population. SDA vegetarian men live more than three years longer than SDA men who eat meat.”
    http://www.sdada.org/position.htm

    You don’t need meat protein.

  13. I haven’t had a single gram of meat protein since 1992. I eat very little soy. I eat vegetables and grains and legumes and nuts and fruit.

I’m 5’10″, 160 pounds. I lift weights 3 times a week. I bike to work every day. I’m running an 11 mile endurance race in April.

I’m a fucking animal, dude. I could run circles around you.

  14. Yea, come to think of it, you don’t see Fat Vegetarians do you?
The only side effect I’ve heard is that your shit is huge!

  15. Haha. True! I shit twice a day every day.

  16. After all that noise meat still tastes good, and there are still people starving in the world. Does being a misanthrope solve anything? Does giving human rights to livestock make any rational sense? Is there a practical solution here or does Gary Yourofsky just like all the attention he gets from the police or has he just found a novel and unique way to get laid? I do believe that animals feel pain, have emotions and there is unnecessary suffering but these vegan types are nothing but fascists. Refuse, resist.

  17. It’s hardly fascist to opt out of the cycle of death that’s supported by the man.
